Q: Is it safe in Belize?
A: Belize declared its independence from Great Britain in 1981 but is still considered part of the British Commonwealth. Belize boasts two major political parties that closely resemble the Democratic and Republican parties in the U.S. The PUP was just re-elected to another five-year term in office providing a stable base for government initiatives. There is virtually no major crime in Belize in comparison to other areas of the globe. You can still walk the streets at night and feel comfortable greeting your neighbors. International organizations such as the Lions Club all have local charters.

Q: Can I own property in Belize?
A: It is legal for a foreigner to own property in Belize and property transfers are handled similarly to the U.S.. Free hold title will protect your interests. There is a tax on property transfers. Casa Cayo will not show you properties unless legally surveyed and titled.

Q: Can I work in Belize?
A: You must be a legal resident or obtain a work permit to work in Belize. The process is rather simple if not time consuming. Casa Cayo can direct you to the proper agencies to fulfill your requirements.

Q: What about taxes?
A: Unlike the U.S., Belize does not tax you on income derived outside the country. There are no Corporate Taxes and no Capital Gains Taxes in Belize. There are personal and business taxes. There are property taxes as well but they pale to taxes paid on property in the U.S.. Belize does not report income information to other countries so it is your responsibility to report as required by your country of domicile.

Q: What currency is used in Belize?
